MAMMA MIA! (2008)

MAMMA MIA!, like THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, GREASE and even DIRTY DANCING is pretty critic proof. People are just going to keep seeing it time and time again and it is a dead cert to join THE SOUND OF MUSIC on the sing-along circuit. And, to be honest, it is a terrific piece of entertainment with some of the most engaging performances I've seen for some time. Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgaard and Julie Walters are obviously having a ball and its pretty infectious. For me though, the best is Christine Baranski who I've adored since her days on THE CYBILL SHEPHERD SHOW. The woman is hot! Rating ****

Christine Baranski is indeed (and always has been) a hoot AND a holler!!! I unashamedly admit to being a fan of ABBA (I even own their cd box set fer goodness sakes) but I also admit to not having ever given MAMMA MIA the slightest thought. I know absolutely nothing about it and didn't think I needed to find out. However, now that you have successfully launched it onto my radar, that may indeed change.

It's simply uncomplicated fun with a lot of people making serious fools of themselves without any of patronising the audience. The final post credit sequence when Streep, Baranski, Walters and, most unexpectedly, Brosnan ans Skarsgaard don Abba boots and super trooper space suits for an in your face rendition of Waterloo is a total joy.
